--- # ACLU SoCal Pasadena-Foothills Chapter Forum Thursday, Jul 26 # California Leading the Way on Criminal Justice Reform Join our neighbors at the ACLU SoCal Pasadena-Foothills Chapter for a forum discussing several landmark police practices and criminal justice reform bills that are at the crossroads in Sacramento, days away from becoming law or being killed. When: Monday, August 6th, 7:00 p.m. to 9 p.m. Where: Glendale City Church, [610 E. California Ave., Glendale](https://maps.google.com/?q=610+E.+California+Ave.,+Glendale&entry=gmail&source=g) **[RSVP HERE](https://laprogressive.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a43f8bd9c2aeb95bb0ccdd315&id=6455dd0719&e=5a777f6627)** **Police Use of Deadly Force**: Under AB 931, California police officers would only be allowed to use deadly force if there were no reasonable alternatives available and if there was an imminent threat to the officer’s or another person’s safety. Current policy uses the looser approach of allowing deadly force when “reasonable.” The change would require officers to use de-escalation tactics where possible and to avoid unnecessary shootings. **Police Misconduct & Use of Force**: SB 1421 will make police procedures more transparent and officers more accountable to the communities they serve. The legislation will make available critical information on how police departments handle the most serious use of force incidents, as well as proven cases of sexual assault, perjury, or fabrication of evidence. Join the discussion among expert attorneys and law enforcement officers who have studied these issues deeply. - **Peter Bibring**, senior staff attorney at the ACLU of Southern California and director of police practices for the ACLU of California. - **Cheryl Dorsey**, retired Los Angles Police Department sergeant and author of the forthcoming *Black and Blue: The Creation of a Social Advocate*. - **Sharon Kyle**, publisher of LA Progressive, a law professor, and ACLU National Board member. - **Jennifer Rojas**, moderator, community engagement and policy advocate at the ACLU of Southern California, working from the Orange County office. **Cosponsors:** ACLU SoCal Pasadena/Foothills Chapter • LA Progressive The event is free and open to the public Contact: Dick Price [dick\_and\_sharon@laprogressive.com](mailto:dick_and_sharon@laprogressive.com), 213.434.4643 RSVP: **[https://aclu-glendale-ab931.eventbrite.com](https://laprogressive.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a43f8bd9c2aeb95bb0ccdd315&id=f24b9736cd&e=5a777f6627)** Want to get more involved in the **ACLU SoCal San Fernando Valley Chapter**?
