# Peace on Earth

HOLIDAY MESSAGE –
“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.” So, proclaim a multitude of angels in Luke 2:14 of the King James version of the Bible.
But, from time out of mind, mankind has used the glorification of their God as justification for contravening peace and good will toward those who don’t share the same precise beliefs.
In 1849, and with a focus less on Bethlehem and more on contemporary issues of war and peace in the wake of the Mexican-American War, Henry Sears was inspired by the angels’ words to write:
It came upon the midnight clear,
That glorious song of old,
From angels bending near the earth
To touch their harps of gold;
“Peace on the earth, good will to men
From heaven's all-gracious King” –
The world in solemn stillness lay
To hear the angels sing.
Still through the cloven skies they come
With peaceful wings unfurled,
And still their heavenly music floats
O'er all the weary world;
Above its sad and lowly plains
They bend on hovering wing,
And ever o'er its Babel-sounds
The blessed angels sing.
But with the woes of sin and strife
The world has suffered long;
Beneath the angel-strain have rolled
Two thousand years of wrong;
And man, at war with man, hears not
The love-song which they bring; –
Oh hush the noise, ye men of strife,
And hear the angels sing!
And ye, beneath life's crushing load,
Whose forms are bending low,
Who toil along the climbing way
With painful steps and slow,
Look now! for glad and golden hours
Come swiftly on the wing; –
Oh, rest beside the weary road
And hear the angels sing!
For lo! the days are hastening on
By prophet bards foretold,
When with the ever circling years
Comes round the age of gold;
When Peace shall over all the earth
Its ancient splendors fling,
And the whole world give back the song
Which now the angels sing.
And on Christmas Day in 1864, those same words moved Henry Wadsworth Longfellow to write:
I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day
Their old familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet the words repeat
Of peace on earth, good will to men.
I thought how, as the day had come,
The belfries of all Christendom
Had rolled along the unbroken song
Of peace on earth, good will to men.
And in despair I bowed my head:
“There is no peace on earth,” I said,
“For hate is strong and mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good will to men.”
Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
“God is not dead, nor doth he sleep;
The wrong shall fail, the right prevail,
With peace on earth, good will to men.”
Till, ringing singing, on its way,
The world revolved from night to day,
A voice, a chime, a chant sublime,
Of peace on earth, good will to men!
At this time of year, when human beings of multiple traditions hold life-affirming celebrations with friends and families, we and all the leaders of the world need to genuinely listen to these words of peace and good will, embrace them, and commit to the healing of all divisiveness here on earth for this season, and forevermore.
