# Service Above Self? Rotary Faces Its Biggest Test Yet

IN MY OPINION -For more than a century, Rotary International has asked others to live by one simple standard: Is it the truth? Is it fair? Will it build goodwill? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
Those questions are known around the world as Rotary's Four-Way Test.
Today, those same questions are being asked of Rotary itself.
The organization is facing growing criticism after allowing former Irvine Mayor Farrah Khan to continue serving as president of its Orange County chapter despite objections from prominent Jewish organizations over social media posts they argue invoked centuries-old anti-Jewish blood libels.
This controversy is no longer about one person's online comments. It is about whether Rotary's commitment to ethics applies equally to everyone or only when doing so is convenient.
According to public reports, Khan allegedly described Israeli officials as "pedophiles" and "cannibals" while sharing content related to the Israel-Hamas conflict. Jewish organizations contend that this language echoes some of history's oldest and most dangerous antisemitic tropes false accusations that have fueled hatred, persecution, and violence against Jews for centuries.
Those concerns prompted the Jewish Community Action Network (JCAN), the Jewish Federation of Orange County, and the Israeli-American Council to formally urge Rotary International to review Khan's continued leadership.
Their argument strikes at the heart of Rotary's identity.
An organization that asks business leaders, elected officials, and volunteers to uphold the highest ethical standards cannot simply look the other way when credible concerns are raised about one of its own leaders. Ethical principles are not public relations slogans. They are standards that matter most when applying them is uncomfortable.
Julie Heiman, Director of Policy, Legal, and Government Affairs for JCAN, summarized the concern clearly:
“Allowing someone who spreads anti-Jewish blood libels to remain in a leadership position sends a dangerous message.”
Whether Rotary agrees with that conclusion is ultimately its decision. Ignoring the concern is also a decision.
The organizations' letter raises additional concerns, alleging that during Khan's tenure as Irvine mayor, Jewish residents experienced harassment and intimidation during contentious City Council meetings related to the Israel-Hamas conflict and that city leadership failed to adequately address those incidents.
Khan has denied directing her comments toward Jews as a people, stating that her criticism was aimed at the Israeli government and military.
That distinction deserves consideration. So does another reality.
Criticism of any government including Israel's is protected political speech and an essential part of democratic debate. But invoking language that respected Jewish organizations identify as echoing historic blood libels is fundamentally different. When rhetoric mirrors narratives that have long been used to dehumanize Jews, institutions committed to fighting hatred cannot dismiss those concerns as ordinary political disagreement.
Rotary now faces a defining moment.
Its credibility does not rest on the words printed in its mission statement. It rests on whether those words guide its actions.
If Rotary expects ethical leadership from its members, then those expectations cannot depend on politics, popularity, or public pressure. Standards that are enforced selectively are no standards at all.
Around the world, Rotary has earned respect because people believed its commitment to integrity was unwavering. That reputation is now being tested.
The question is no longer whether controversy exists. It clearly does.
The question is whether Rotary will confront it with the transparency, accountability, and moral consistency it has championed for generations.
Organizations rarely lose public trust because they face difficult decisions. They lose it when they refuse to make them.
Rotary's Four-Way Test has guided generations of leaders.
Now the world is watching to see whether Rotary is willing to apply that same test to itself.
