# CityWatch Today: Jeb Bush … Please Clap for a Republican to Challenge Trump

GUEST WORDS--**Donald Trump** may be the presumptive G.O.P. candidate for the 2020 election cycle, but that doesn’t mean the party’s voters are enamored of the concept. A recent Marist poll [found](http://maristpoll.marist.edu/npr-pbs-newshour-marist-poll-results-analysis/#sthash.KLQA1an4.GDVivfIh.dpbs) that 44 percent of Republican voters would like to see a primary challenger. Four in 10 Republican voters feel the same way in [New Hampshire](https://www.insidesources.com/exclusive-4-10-n-h-republicans-support-2020-primary-challenge-president-trump/), as do more than 60 percent in [Iowa](https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/news/politics/iowa-poll/2018/12/17/trump-iowa-republicans-2020-election-white-house-democrats-campaign-romney-sasse-rubio-kasich-flake/2312476002/). But with the exception of casual Libertarian **Bill Weld,** who [announced](https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2019/02/bill-weld-2020-republican-primary-challenge) his intention to take on Trump in 2020, there have been few Republicans willing to speak up for the silent minority—until now.
Emerging from obscurity to undermine Trump is none other than former Florida governor [**Jeb Bush**](https://www.vanityfair.com/people/jeb-bush#intcid=dt-hot-link)**,** the onetime presumptive candidate for the G.O.P. presidential nomination who was mercilessly and unexpectedly crushed under the heel of Trumpism in 2016. “I think someone should run. Just because Republicans ought to be given a choice,” [he tells](https://www.cnn.com/2019/03/15/politics/jeb-bush-trump-2020-cnntv/index.html) former Obama strategist **David Axelrod** in an episode of *The Axe Files* airing Saturday.
