Editor’s Memo: What’s the Rush?

CITYWATCH TODAY—‘Elect me. I’ll be your voice in the halls of power’. When you hear that speech on the campaign trail, it sounds like a promise you can buy into. Isn’t that the way the system is supposed to work?

When you’re being bulldozed by a mega-developer in your own ‘hood, for example, shouldn’t you be able to count on Jerry Brown to put a hand out? To make some noise on your behalf? Jill Stewart reminds us how far out of reach the governor’s hand is when it comes to battling big developers and enforcing California’s Environmental Quality Act. She says his reluctance to be your voice on this issue is personal. What’s the rush, she asks. It’s an important read … in Today’s CityWatch.

Also on today’s front page … a healthy dose of prejudice. Bob Gelfand suggests the actions and comments of some of the Neighborhood Council Budget Day participants reminds us that anti-Semitism is alive and well … even at LA’s very own City Hall. And, Rev. Jim Conn concludes that racism still influences policing in LA and America. We need to listen to what they have to say. Listening is part of the solution to the terrible division facing our country.

Then, tell us what you think. We’re listening.
